Motorola CEO: “Screw the nano”

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

ComputerWorld is reporting that Motorola CEO Ed Zander believes that the iPod nano is a waste.

“Screw the Nano,” said Zander. “What the hell does the Nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs? People are going to want devices that do more than just play music, something that can be seen in many other countries with more advanced mobile phone networks and savvy users,” he said.

Pretty tough words, considering that him and Steve Jobs recently worked together to produce the Motorola ROKR, the first iTunes phone.

View subway maps on your iPod

Monday, September 26th, 2005

IPodSubwayMaps.com offers maps of subway systems that you can view on your phone.

It’s a great service, but many are trying to shut it down. Says Wired:

More than 9,000 people downloaded the map, which was viewable on either an iPod or an iPod nano, before Bright received a Sept. 14 letter from Lester Freundlich, a senior associate counsel at New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority, saying that Bright had infringed the MTA’s copyright and that he needed a license to post the map and to authorize others to download it.

Apple and music labels disagreeing on cost of music

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Says Engadget:

Apple and the major record labels have been cruising towards a confrontation over iTunes Music Store pricing for months now, and one label head, namely Warner Music Group CEO Edgar Bronfman is responding angrily to Stevie J’s comments last week about “greedy” record labels.

“Some songs should be $0.99 and some songs should be more. I don’t want to give anyone the impression that $0.99 is a thing of the past”

Apple telling iPod websites to change their name

Tuesday, September 20th, 2005

From Wired:

Apple is ordering several online iPod accessory vendors to stop using the word “iPod” in their names or URLs.

Apple has sent legal notices to accessory vendors everythingipod.co.uk and iPodlife.

“I’m very nervous that this whole affair will hurt our business financially,” said Barry Mann, director of everythingipod.

In August, Apple threatened legal action against iPod Essentials, which changed its name to mp3Essentials and handed ownership of the iPodEssentials.co.uk domain name to Apple.

Earlier this year, one of the web’s leading iPod-focused websites, iPodLounge, changed its name to iLounge.

It’ll be interesting to see if I receive a letter in the mail asking me to change the name of this website and hand over rights to the domain name to Apple. At this time, though, I believe my website is too small to be on their radar.

Just plug your device into a built-in console in the center armrest. The option comes in two varieties, one for the iPod, another for other USB-based players. Up to six of the player’s folders will be displayed on the car stereo system, and the radio buttons can be used to scan, search or shuffle your mix.
